[WORLD MAP] MERCATOR, RUMOLD. Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio.
[Duisberg:] 1587 [but 1602 or later]. Double-page engraved double-hemispheric world map with Latin text in four columns below the image, Latin text on verso. Sheet 16 1/4 x 20 3/4 inches (41.5 x 53 cm); neat lines of image 11 1/4 x 20 1/2 inches (28.5 x 52 cm); matted with pane on verso revealing text. Light toning to extremities, the central fold on the verso strengthened, else fine.
This is the condensed version of Gerard Mercator's twenty-one sheet world map of 1569, here republished by his son Rumold, first in 1587 with French text below the image, and here sometime after 1602 with Latin text. Shirley notes this map "is a model of clarity and neatness", fully visible here in an original uncolored state, and points out the ornate strapwork surrounding the hemispheres, the armillary sphere at top center and the compass rose between them. A fine example of an important world map. Shirley 157.
