BLACKSTONE, WILLIAM The Great Charter and Charter of the Forest, with other Authentic Instruments.
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1759. Contemporary calf, the covers with an ornate foliate border in gilt, the spine tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, cloth slipcase. 13 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches (35.5 x 26 cm); with separate engraved title and engraved initials and tail-pieces within the text, [4], lxxvi, [4], 86 pp. A clean and wide-margined copy with occasional spotting or pencil marks, worst at first and last leaves, some offset from the engravings, the binding worn with a vertical split to the spine and losses to extremities and a bit of worm damage to the head, worthy of conservation, with the contemporary bookplate of William Wrightson.
First edition of Backstone's important work on the Magna Carta and other early charters, the first English review of the subject. This copy described as a "thick paper copy" when offered as part of The Distinguished Collection formed by the Late Saul Cohn, East Orange, New Jersey, 18 & 19 October 1955, lot 72.
