CARROLL, LEWIS. The Hunting of the Snark. An Agony in Eight Fits.
London: Macmillan, 1876. First edition, stated "Thirteenth Thousand;" in the excessively rare dust jacket (this remained the same throughout the edition). Publisher's pictorial cloth (by Henry Holiday), jacket as noted. 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches (18 x 12.5 cm); xi, 83 pp., [1] pp. ad leaf; with 9 plates after Henry Holiday. The dust jacket with a detached section at the head, slightly differing in tone as it was tucked behind the rest of the jacket, a loss to the head and foot of the spine and a few other defects, but in all a remarkable survival. Penciled initial on rear panel. The cloth is exceptionally bright for this book.
"For the Snark was a Boojum, you see!" Copies of the first edition of Hunting of the Snark in the dust jacket are genuinely rare; at least as rare as Boojums, in fact, with no more than a handful of copies known. Despite the section of jacket detached but present, this appears to be substantially more complete than the few surviving examples we can trace (with no missing text that we can discern), and should prove eminently restorable.
