Lot 208
HEMINGWAY, ERNEST A Farewell to Arms.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First edition of the trade issue, first issue without the disclaimer to p. [x]. Publisher's cloth, in the first issue dust jacket with "Katharine Barclay" in the front flap text and the $2.50 price present. 7 3/4 x 5 inches (19 x 12.5 cm); 355 pp. Very slight fading to the spine of the jacket, with few small nicks with losses and a small crease to the head, small loss to the blank margin of the rear panel, but in all a very clean and unrestored example of the jacket on a fresh copy of the book, with the gold labels mostly luminous, though a faint ring to the rear cover.
In condition such as this, the first trade edition is quite rare. Hemingway's great novel of WWI is considered one of the best of the era, and the Art Deco jacket (by Cleon) is an icon of modern literature. Hanneman A8.a; Grissom A.8.1a.
