AUTOGRAPH ALBUM OF AMERICAN PRESIDENTS, CABINET OFFICIALS etc. The album of a late 19th century collector of American autographs.
13 1/2 x 11 inches (34.5 x 28 cm); approximately 60 ff., the autographs with mounted illustrations etc. relating to the autographs. Album worn, most autographs laid down or tipped-in.
Includes the following Presidential autographs: George Washington, cut signature with a lengthy 1848 letter relating the provenance; John Adams, to Benjamin Lincoln, Quincy, July 23, 1799; portion of a document signed by both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison; a ship's passport (head trimmed) signed by James Monroe; cut signatures of Andrew Jackson and Martin van Buren; autograph letter of William Henry Harrison, North Bend, March 4, 1840; cut signatures of James Tyler and James H. Polk (the latter co-signed by James Buchanan as Secretary of State, from a ship's passport); a card signed by Zachary Taylor and members of his cabinet; cut signature of Millard Fillmore; James Buchanan, autograph letter signed dated West Point, 20th June, 1839, and a cut signature of Franklin Pierce; cut signatures of Abraham Lincoln, William Seward, and Andrew Johnson; cut signature of Ulysses S. Grant; cut signature and note signed dated 21 March 1892 by Rutherford B. Hayes; James Garfield note signed, , Menton, Ohio June 22, 1880, with envelope; signature card of Chester A. Arthur dated November 15, 1881 and an autograph letter signed by Grover Cleveland on White House stationery, dated September 1, 1887; card signed by Benjamin Harrison; signature card signed by Grover Cleveland; letter signed by William McKinley, 27 February 1892.
This is followed by an extensive section of cabinet officials. These include Alexander Hamilton, cut signature; Albert Gallatin (an extensive 1821 letter); Aaron Burr (cut signature) and John Armstrong; John Calhoun; Henry Clay (cut signature and signed card); Daniel Webster, a note signed dated 1846); a card signed by James Polk, James Buchanan, and others of his cabinet; Edward Everett, an autograph letter signed dated August 1847, with envelope; Jefferson Davis, autograph note signed, 28th October, 1854; and other members of the Confederacy, including Howell Cobb, James Thompson, etc. (cut signatures); William H. Seward, autograph note signed dated 1855; Gideon Welles, note signed on Navy Department stationery; and some dozens of other notable American public figures, including cabinet officials, Vice-Presidents etc. etc. A complete list by name is available upon request.
