SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Betty Comden's Screen Writers' Guild award for Singin' in the Rain, 1952, and related items.
A silvered metal medallion, the recto with the Screen Writers' Guild emblem, the verso engraved "Fifth Annual Award/1952/Betty Comden/'Singin' in the Rain'/Best Written American Musical", 3 1/2 inches round (8.5 cm), housed in a fitted velvet lined case, Losses to the silvering and tarnished areas; Together with Betty Comden's Screen Writers' Guild award for Bells are Ringing, 1960. Engraved medal with separate engraved plaque, the medal 2 1/2 inches round (6.5 cm), housed in a fitted velvet lined case; A sterling silver box with presentation inscription from Betty to her husband Steve, 1949; and an honorary degree given to Betty Comden, 2001.

A rare award from one of the most popular musical films of the 20th century, Singin' in the Rain, set to music by Jules Styne and with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green with whom Comden shared the award. Styne, Comden and Greene had also written the music and lyrics for the earlier stage version of Bells are Ringing but were honored by the Screen Writers' Guild for the 1960 film adaptation directed by Vincente Minelli and starring Dean Martin and Judy Holliday (who also starred on Broadway). These items were acquired at the Tepper Galleries auction of items from the Estate of Betty Comden, May 2007.
