This is the second printing with the number line on the copyright reading "3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 8 9/9 0/0 01 02 / Printed in the U.S.A 23 / First American edition, October 1998." Publisher's red cloth backed backed purple boards with diamond pattern, the cloth spine with "J.K. Rowling" at the head, in the first state dust jacket with raised gold lettering to the spine, "J.K. Rowling" at the head, the price on the inside flap present at $16.96, the rear panel with the quote from The Guardian and the cream box with two bar codes and the code 51695 above the smaller bar code. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 15 cm); 309 pp. A very fine copy.
A fine copy of the first American edition of the first book in the Harry Potter series, inscribed in the year of publication. The present volume was inscribed for the recipient at a signing alongside Lynne Reid Banks at Books of Wonder in New York City in 1998.
