MANN, HORACE Autograph quotation signed laid-in to a first edition of A Few Thoughts on the Powers and Duties of Woman.
The quotation in ink on a 3 1/2 x 5 inch card reading "Strong passions will work wonders - provided there is a stronger reason & moral sense to control them." Signed in full "Horace Mann" and dated from Washington, 12 April 1852. Spotting and one small abrasion; The book Syracuse: Halls, Mills and Company, 1853. First edition. Original gilt lettered limp cloth with pink endpapers. 6 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches (15.5 x 11 cm); 141. Foxed, spine faded.
A rare inscription from social reformer and educator Horace Mann, laid into an uncommon volume written as "an earnest attempt to elevate the condition of woman" (preface). Both items date from the period when Mann completed his term as a U.S. Congressman and his presidency of Antioch College.
