Pair of George III Mahogany Hall Chairs
Late 18th century
Each arched waisted back centered by an oval reserve painted with a crest of a whippet and the motto BE JUST AND FEAR NOT, the rounded plank seat raised on ring-turned tapering legs. Height 36 1/2 inches (92.7 cm), width 17 inches (43.1 cm), depth of seat 15 inches (38 cm).

The motto comes from William Shakespeare's Henry VIII, 1613, act 3, scene 2: 'Be just, and fear not. Let all the ends thou aim'st at be thy country's, Thy God's and truth's.'

Previous restorations, both chairs with repaired breaks to tops of left front legs, one now with plug, one back rail possibly replaced, sunfading to seats, re-decoration to crests, one crest with tail between whippet's legs, the other with tail behind, old marks and scratches, scuffs to legs and feet, one front leg with age crack at top.
