George III Sterling Silver Second Course Dish
William Cripps, London, 1765
Shaped circular with gadrooned border, the rim engraved with heraldic arms. Diameter 13 3/4 inches (35 cm), approximately 40 ounces.
The arms are those of Phipps impaling Liddell as borne by Constantine Henry Phipps, Earl of Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby and Baron Mulgrave (1797-1863). Phipps had a long career in politics serving as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1835-1839), Home Secretary (1839-1841) and British Ambassador to France (1846-1852), all positions which required a huge service of silver for official entertaining.
