School of Jacopo da Ponte, called Jacopo Bassano
Autumn
Oil on copper, stamped with the maker's mark and the hand symbol of the City of Antwerp
8 1/2 x 11 1/8 inches (21.6 x 28.3 cm)
This composition was conceived around 1574-75 as one of a series of the Four Seasons. With their unpretentious realism and charming anecdotal details, these compositions proved to be some of Bassano's most popular. After the Four Seasons were reproduced as egravings, they were imitated throughout Europe. This example was almost certainly painted in Flanders by an artist trained there, since the back of the copper sheet bears the stamped hand symbol of the City of Antwerp.
