A Large Baseball Autograph Collection, circa 1929-1933, including Babe Ruth and other major players.
A collection of signatures of approximately 500 players assembled by two newsboys who sold papers near Fenway Park and Braves Field from 1929 to 1933. Includes signatures in both pencil and ink under newspaper portraits affixed to the recto and verso of about 100 loose lined stationery sheets (10 x 8 inches); a smaller notebook with dozens of signatures similarly near affixed newspaper clippings (8 1/2 x 7 inches); and numerous clipped signatures or signatures of several players on small slips. Includes duplicates, predominately pencil signatures but some in ink, the sheets worn with clippings detached, some signatures inked over (including Gehrig), showthrough of adhesive, short tears and other signs of handling, sold as a collection and well worthy of conservation. Sold as is.
A remarkable collection including two examples of Babe Ruth and signatures of Honus Wagner, Lou Gehrig (see note), Lefty Gomez, Walter Johnson, Earl Averill, Hank Greenberg, Dizzy Dean, Pepper Martin, Mickey Cochrane, Leo Durocher, Goose Goslin, Connie Mack, Bucky Walters, Lefty Grove, Mel Ott, Babe Herman, Frank Crosetti, Dazzy Vance, Joe Sewell, Jimmie Foxx, Jim Bottomley, Rogers Hornsby, the Waner brothers, KiKi Cuyler and Moe Berg and many other notable players and Hall of Famers from this early period
. The Ruth signatures include a sheet signed on the header in ink by above his full length portrait. The Lou Gehrig signature is inked over but is affixed to an example of his 1929 Kashin Publications R316 card, the signature of Goose Goslin and one other also affixed to cards from this set. Present is an unsigned example of Mel Ott's 1931 W517 Strip Card #30. A fascinating collection carefully assembled by two indiscriminate Boston newsboys, often assembled by team, and with a trove of newspaper photographs and clippings. During this period, the Philadelphia Athletics won the World Series twice, and that team is well represented.
