 Cambridge: MacMillan, 1855. First edition. Three volumes. Publisher's cloth, housed in cloth slipcase. 7 1/2 x 5 inches; [2], viii, 303, 16 pp., the ads dated April 1855; vi, 356 pp.; vi, 373 pp. A fine unrestored set overall with a few bumps and scuffs to cloth, the hinges cracked throughout, light toning and spotting, with the contemporary booklabel and signatures of G. Belden, the Edward Hubert Litchfield copy with his bookplates.

A fine set in original cloth of Kingsley's most celebrated work. This set with the ad leaf signed "Vol. I. b" at the front of the first volume and the ads dated April (February is earliest). This copy sold as part of the Edward Hubert Litchfield Collection, Parke-Bernet, 3 December 1951, lot 574.
