Skeat described the first work as "the most important book ever published on the subject of English dialects" (i.e. up to that time, excepting the monumental works published in Skeat's era). The second work includes a supplement to Francis Grose's Provincial Glossary at the end. The third is a later but standard edition of the life of the engaging rogue Bampfylde Moore Carew (first published 1745), supplemented by a dictionary of cant terms.
