MELVILLE, HERMAN Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life. During a Four Months' Residence in a Valley of the Marquesas, with Notices of the French Occupation of Tahiti and the Provisional Cession of the Sandwich Islands to Lord Paulet.
New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1846. First American edition. Two parts in one. Early burgundy morocco tooled in blind, rebacked to style with raised bands and green morocco lettering labels, the original cloth covers and spine mounted at rear, modern marbled endpapers. 7 1/2 x 5 inches; [xvi including map frontispiece] 166; [iv] 325 pp. In this copy, the ad leaves are at front of volume I and are paginated [v]-viii with page ix-x not present (as identified in some copies by BAL), without original blanks. In all an attractive copy which is very clean within, a newspaper clipping to one blank has offset the half-title, a small area torn away from the lower corner of p. xv, the spine lightly sunned.
The first American edition of Melville's first novel, nicely presented and with the original covers bound-in. BAL 13653.
