Publisher's cloth decorated in blind, the spines gilt lettered, slipcase. 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches; iv, 303 pp; iv, 348 pp.; iv, 395 pp., without ads. Fine overall, the spines and extremities lightly faded, hinges split in volume I, lightly toned, spotting to first and last leaves of volumes II & III.

A fine set of the first edition of Meredith's first full-length novel. Upon publication the work was a critical and financial failure and was not reprinted until 1878, rendering the first edition rarely encountered in such condition.
