POOLE, JOSHUA The English Parnassus: or, A helpe to English poesie. Containing a short institution of that art, a collection of all ...
London: Thomas Johnson, 1657. The first English rhyming dictionary, the issue with lines 7 and 8 reading "Containing/a short institution of that art". 18th century calf-backed marbled boards. 6 1/2 x 4 inches (16 x 10 cm); [26], 597, [1] pp., title-page in red and black. Lacks first blank, closely trimmed just touching some numerals and catchwords, occasional worming in lower margin, old inscriptions and pen trials on title and elsewhere in several hands; one on the margin of the penultimate leaf noting that a Penrud[d]ocke owned the book in 1664, so clearly a well-loved family copy. Late 18th century armorial bookplate of Charles Penruddocke, the Wiltshire politician (no Safire plate but from his collection).
ESTC notes two issues with varying title-page wording (no priority assigned), although curiously this does not have the pagination error after p. 288 recorded there for both issues. ESTC R468961; Alson VI 552; Cordell P-77.
C From the Collection of the late William Safire
