 Indianapolis: George C. Hitt, 1883. First edition. Original parchment wrappers printed in red, without the dust jacket, housed in a morocco backed slipcase. 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; 50 pp., title printed in red. The covers with stains, wear and split to the foot of the spine, a few spots but generally clean within, with a penciled presentation inscription at front dated 24 July 1883 and with the shelf marker at end and bookplate of Charles H. Millburn.

James Whitcomb Riley's fragile first book, a collection of poems in the Hoosier dialect which first appeared in the Indianapolis Journal under the pseudonym of Benj. F. Johnson of Boone.
