New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. First American edition (preceding the London edition by 4 days). Original yellow wrappers printed in black. 7 1/4 x 5 inches; [viii] 138, 14 pp. ads at rear. The wrappers loosely mounted to a modern brown wrapper, the original wrapper spine lacking, other marginal chips and remnants of tape and glue, clean within.

For this first American edition, Scribner's issued 3,000 copies in wrappers and 1,200 in cloth. Prideaux noted that the earliest copy with inscription by Stevenson is dated 30 January 1886; this copy bears an unrelated gift inscription in pencil to the wrapper dated 24 April 1886.
