DOYLE, ARTHUR CONAN Sir Nigel.
London: Smith Elder, 1906. First edition in book form, inscribed "With all thanks for assistance/Arthur Conan Doyle./Dec. '06." Publisher's cloth with gilt stamped knight motif to cover, housed in a morocco backed slipcase. 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 394 pp. ad leaf, 8 plates after Arthur Twidle. Small stain to lower corner of cover, spine slightly darkened, hinges tender cracking, foxing to edges and intermittently throughout.
To write both The White Company and its prequel Sir Nigel, Arthur Conan Doyle immersed himself in study of the wars of the 14th century and both tell the story of Nigel Loring, a knight in service of King Edward III in the Hundred Years War. Rare inscribed, this copy is presented to an unknown collaborator. This copy sold Sotheby's 16 May 1984, lot 257.
