Lot Details

Lot 1093
T.C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. Majolica Cobalt-Blue Ground Snake and Putti Moon Flask
Circa 1870
Impressed uppercase mark, M and cypher, shape no. 336, black painted 336 and 20
Of pilgrim bottle form, the shoulder modeled with two cherubs with raised fists menacing a gray snake coiled at the foot of the vase and ascending, with yellow line rims. Height 10 inches.
Cover missing.

Note:
A close variation of this model was produced by Hugo Lonitz. The Lonitz design drawing, model no. 1426, illustrates a domed cover with butterfly knop, in turn implying that the putti's aggression is protective and more selfless in nature.

Literature:
Majolica International Society, Karmason Library, no. KL001626 (noted on KL card as Hugo Lonitz. Piece is marked T.C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. See image and comparative documentation for Lonitz model).
