Mintons Majolica Mottled-Green and Brown Ground Banana Leaf Water Jug

Various indistinct impressed cyphers, designed by Hugues Protât
Cylindrical, modeled as overlapping leaves, the bracket handle as entwined vines. Height 7 inches; Together with a Minton Majolica Green and Lavender Ground Water Lily Jug. Date cypher for 1868, impressed uppercase mark and 12, shape no. 1228, oviform with looped vine handle, modeled as upright overlapping lily pad leaves issuing white blossoms, the interior in green, height 9 inches.

The Mintons shape books for this pattern illustrate a related umbrella stand, shape no. 2266, the present form, a water jug, shape no. 549, and a monogrammed garden seat, shape no. 1116. Hugues Protât (born 1816, active 1835 - 1890), was a French sculptor employed in England in the early 1850's. At the Minton Memorial Institute, Stoke, he was appointed 'Modelling Instructor' at the School of Art, 1859-1863, but continued to work in a freelance capacity.
