Hugo Lonitz Majolica Log Jardiniere (Jardiniere Baumstamm)
Circa 1880
Impressed double fish mark and shape no. 1534
Naturalistically modeled on four branch feet, a riveted strap at each end, the interior turquoise. Height 5 1/4 inches, length 13 3/4 inches.
Note:
Though all the same numerals, the shape no. 1534 is apparently a discrepancy. This form is illustrated in the Hugo Lonitz design catalog of 1884 as model no. 1435. It was originally produced in three sizes with branch feet (a, b and c) and in two sizes without feet (d and e). The present example is size a, the largest (35 cm). It is also the most expensive (list price 3.50). The 1884 catalog does not directly provide an illustration for shape no. 1534. It is nearly chronological, but imperfect, and appears to skip this model number.
