Group of English and American Majolica Plates and Mugs
Circa 1875-90
Comprising two George Jones turquoise-ground 'Bamboo and Ribbon' plates, circa 1875, unmarked, each molded with yellow flowering bamboo entwined about a pink ribbon wrapped trellis, edged by bamboo stalks, the reverse with tortoise-shell glazes in mottled green and brown, diameter 8 1/2 inches; a Josiah Wedgwood & Sons 'Sunflower' plate, circa 1875, impressed uppercase mark, Y and F, naturalistically molded as an open yellow and brown petaled flower blossom resting in a green stave basket, diameter 8 3/4 inches; an English cobalt-blue ground 'Fern and Flower' plate, circa 1880, brown painted Z, molded as a basket, the small central well radiating long stiff leaf tips issuing clustered white flowers, the border as basket stave work, diameter 8 1/2 inches; eight English and American cylindrical mugs, circa 1880, one with indistinct impressed uppercase mark and 5, green painted 51, one with GSH and Etruscan Medallion mark and the mustache cup with an indistinct raised registry diamond, two with a frieze of pond lilies and reeds before a stand of stiff-leaf tips, the GSH with oak branches and basket weave, another with scallop shells and seaweed, the fifth with fern, the sixth with maple leaves on a yellow rustic ground, the seventh with meandering vine on a cruciform ground and the eighth an S. Fielding ribbon-tied mustache-cup with flowers on a pebbled ground, approximate height 3 1/2 inches; a 'Bamboo and Fern' 'Surprise' mug, circa 1890, unmarked, perhaps Wardle, of cylindrical form with branch handle, the side molded with fern before bamboo, the interior applied with two frogs at the base, height 4 1/4 inches; and a Griffen, Smith & Hill Etruscan yellow-ground 'Water Lily' mug, circa 1880, faint impressed GSH monogram and Etruscan Majolica medallion mark, black printed 92, faceted cylindrical with vine handle, molded with a continuous frieze of pond lilies and bulrushes, pink interior, height 3 1/2 inches.
