London: John Francis and Charles Rivington, 1784. Fourth edition, two parts bound in one. Recently rebound in modern half calf over marbled boards, spine titled and ruled in gilt, all edges sprinkled red. 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches; lxxxii, 268, xxxiv, 111, [11] pp.; engraved frontispiece, 13 engraved plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Two tissue guards loose, contents lightly foxed and browned.
An illustrated and annotated edition with large additions by Sir John Hawkins (1719-1789), one of Samuel Johnson's closest friends.
