[INDIA-HUNTING] [Frequently incorrectly attributed to LEVESON, HENRY ASTBURY]. AN OLD SHEKARREE. The Spear and the Rifle; or Recollections of Sport in India.
London: Ward & Lock, [1860]. First and only edition. Publisher's printed cloth. 6.5 x 4 inches; [4], 230 pp.; bookseller's label of Richardson Bros., London and bookseller's stamp of Thacker and Co., Bombay to front pastedown. Cloth sunned, stained and rubbed, especially at spine edges where the top layer of cloth is chipping, corners bumped, slight spine lean, contents occasionally lightly foxed; despite all faults, the binding is quite sound.
A scarce Indian hunting memoir often attributed to Henry Astbury Leveson, who wrote under a similar pseudonym (Leveson was "The Old Shekarry"), but Czech states that this is incorrect, based presumably on the biography of the author in the work (this author fled a school in Germany) and the disparity between the two names. The author recounts his hunts for hog, elephant, tiger, rhinoceros (these last two in Bengal), buffalo and bear. WorldCat locates six copies of this book, two of which are in the USA. Czech Asia p. 7.
