Lot 212
[SHEEP HUNTING] HORNADAY, WILLIAM T. Notes on the mountain sheep of North America, with a description of a new species.
New York: New York Zoological Society, [1901]. "Reprinted from the Fifth Annual Report of the New York Zoological Society." Cloth-backed boards, publisher's wrappers retained. 9 1/4 x 5 5/8 inches (23.5 x 15 cm); 122 pp.; folding map, plates after photographs. Some wear to binding. With the bookplate of the Library of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard, with accession notes, withdrawal stamp etc..
"The description of Fannin's mountain sheep, reprinted herewith, was read before the New York Zoological Society at its annual meeting on January 8, 1901, and published on that date as an appendix to the Society's fifth annual report." Unfortunately for Hornaday, this has proven taxonomically erroneous: "Fannin sheep have more recently been confirmed as admixed individuals with predominantly Dall's sheep genetic origins." (Wikipedia).
