Boston: D. Lothrop, [1885]. First edition. Publisher's brown cloth decorated in gilt and black. 7 x 4 5/8 inches (17.5 x 12 cm); viii, 333 pp.; illustrated with double-page frontispiece map, 22 wood-engraved plates and text illustrations. Almost fine.
Account of the indigenous tribes and natural history of lower Alaska based on a series of letters appearing in the columns of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat during the summer of 1883 and in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and in The New York Times during the summer of 1884, with accounts of Ft. Wrangel, Chilkoot, Juneau, missions, etc. "Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore was an American author, geographer, and photographer, who became the first woman to sit on the board of trustees of the National Geographic Society" (Wikipedia).
