London: Sampson Low, Marston [etc.], 1879. First edition. Three-quarters period tan calf, marbled sides. 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (21 x 13 cm); xvi, 426 pp.; two folding maps at front (one of the geology of the region), illustrations by Albert Bierstadt and the author. Some binding wear, foot of spine a trifle chipped, generally a sound copy.
Starting in Newfoundland, the author travelled to the Western United States, where he hunted a variety of game. There are good accounts of the gold fields, Indian territory, etc. "Well written ... with a good amount of hunting the elusive bighorn." -Heller 400, citing the 1879 edition; Phillips, 388.
