Four American Sterling Silver Sporting Interest Matchsafes
Various makers, circa 1900
Comprising one acid etched with polo match, height 2 3/8 inhces (6 cm); one with hunting dogs in relief, height 2 1/2 inches (6.5 cm); another with a portrait of a bulldog amongst Art Nouveau scrolls, height 2 1/2 inches (6.4 cm); and the last engraved with a portrait of a dog, height 2 1/2 inches (6.3 cm), total approximately 80.4 dwt.

The invention of matches in the early 19th century meant that smoking could now move outdoors and become part of outdoor sporting life. Matchsafes decorated with sporting themes were popular with middle and upper class men to show their interests and hobbys.
