NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held the successful inaugural Stage & Screen auction April 28, 2021 to a global audience of collectors and fans who drove strong prices throughout the sale. This landmark auction showcased over 300 lots of original set designs and stage props, costumes and red carpet gowns, signed photographs and memorabilia from the vast history of the performing arts: theater, Hollywood, opera and dance.

With competitive international bidding, the sale totaled an exceptional $615,573, far surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $289,300-445,850, with a strong 89% sold by lot and 100% by value.

Recognizing the importance of the performing arts to the fabric of New York, and the terrible toll that the pandemic is taking on the entertainment community, Doyle is proud to donate 10% of our profit from this auction to The Actors Fund.

The Celeste Holm Collection

Doyle was honored to offer the Collection of theater legend and Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning actress Celeste Holm (1917-2012) as a special section of the auction. This remarkable collection featured important items relating to Ms. Holm’s roles in Golden Age Broadway musicals and Hollywood films.

Highlighting the collection was her 1948 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for Gentleman’s Agreement that realized $20,160 against a $20,000-30,000 estimate. Her annotated script and song book for Green Grow the Lilacs, the musical that became Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, sold for $8,190, tripling its $2,000-3,000 estimate. The Actors Fund

The Actors Fund partnered with Christine Baranski to present an exciting group of celebrity memorabilia offered as a special section of the auction. While a portion of proceeds from every item in the auction will benefit The Actors Fund, 100% of the hammer price of lots 64-147 will go entirely to The Actors Fund.

The top lot of the sale was the monkey music box prop from the recent West End production of The Phantom of the Opera that achieved $31,500, surpassing its $20,000-30,000 estimate. The music box was offered together with a personal invitation from Andrew Lloyd Webber for two to attend the Opening Night of Phantom on Broadway.

A beaded gown by Jackson Lowell worn by Dolly Parton to the 2019 CMA Awards found favor among country music fans who sent the dress soaring over its estimate of $2,000-3,000 to a stunning $18,900.

Hugh Jackman's star power turned out competitive bidding on an iconic brown leather jacket that he wore as Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past, sending it $15,120, far surpassing its $2,000-3,000 estimate.

Fans of The Boss drove bidding on a black T-shirt, blue jeans and leather boots worn on Broadway by Bruce Springsteen far over its $2,000-3,000 estimate to achieve $15,120.

Founded in 1882, The Actors Fund is a national 501(c)(3) charitable organization for performers and behind-the-scenes workers in the entertainment community with a unique understanding of the challenges involved in a life in the arts. Services include emergency financial assistance, affordable housing, health care and insurance counseling, senior care, secondary career development and more. Read More

The Costume Industry Coalition

In response to the entertainment industry shut down, the Costume Industry Coalition (CIC) launched to advocate for the survival of New York City's custom costume industry. CIC Members include 56 small, unique, independent businesses and artisans that create, supply and care for costumes for the entertainment industry. 100% of the hammer price of lots 148-164 will go entirely to the Costume Industry Coalition.

Highlighting the property from this group was a pair of autographed boots worn by Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton: An American Musical, the most important musical of the 21st century. The iconic boots realized $9,450, more than tripling their $2,000-3,000 estimate.

Since timelines for the full reopening of entertainment venues remain unclear, CIC Members continue to work to ensure their artisans will have an artistic home to which to return once the pandemic is completely over. Read More

The Estate of Thomas P. Lacy

Featured in the auction is property from the Estate of the famed actor Thomas P. Lacy. In addition to his extensive theater career, and roles in such films as The Royal Tenenbaums and Doc Hollywood, Mr. Lacy also appeared in the television series Law & Order, Three’s Company and Gunsmoke, among many others.

Works from the Estate of Thomas P. Lacy include a trove of original set and costume designs, highlighted by a costume design attributed to Leon Bakst (Russian, 1866-1924) that realized $21,450, far surpassing its $3,000-5,000 estimate; a 1969 costume design for Coco by Cecil Beaton (British, 1904-1980) that sold for $16,380, ten times its $1,200-1,800 estimate; and a set design for Me and Juliet by Jo Mielziner (French/American, 1901-1976) estimated at $1,000-1,500 that realized $11,970.

World Auction Record

Mozart Sneezes, a group of nine works on paper created in 1983 for the Mostly Mozart Festival by Milton Glaser (American, 1929-2020), tripled its estimate of $3,000-5,000, selling for $15,120 -- A World Auction Record for the Artist.
