A 44-Star American Flag
An unusual hand-stitched American flag, circa 1890 or later, with 44 five-point stars affixed to the front only of a purple canton, the hoist with two old eyelets and pull string, the flag overall 52 x 91.5 inches; the canton 28 1/2 x 35 inches. Lightly stitched along seams and stars to a linen backing with velco mounting strips. A few small abraded areas, minor staining, the colors dark, well preserved and prepared for display.
The 44-Star flag became the official flag of the United States on July 4th, 1891 with the the admission of Wyoming on July 10th, 1890. The purple canton is an unusual and attractive feature on this hand-stitched flag.
