Lot Details

Lot 138
WISTER, OWEN The Virginian; A Horseman of the Plains.
First edition. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1902. Publisher's decorative tan cloth. 7 1/2 x 5 inches (19 x 13 cm); xii, 504, [6] pp. ads.; 8 plates by Arthur I. Keller. Some soiling and wear to cloth, slight lean, a trifle overopened.

The first true novel of the Western genre (though arguably Emma Ghent Curtis's earlier The Administratix is also a contender), The Virginian is set in Wyoming, and the duel between Trampas and the protagonist (p. 480) is the first such "showdown" in fiction.
