Boston: Houghton Mifflin, [1908]. One of 750 copies of the large-paper edition, this set 231, with an original letter from George Henry Lewes, 4 pp, in a window mount, at the front. Twenty-five volumes, three-quarters brown morocco, marbled sides, top edge gilt. 8 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches (21.5 x 14.5 cm); various paginations, plates on japon with frontispieces in two states. Minimal wear, a few minor scuffs, spines a little toned, in all an attractive set.
The letter from Eliot's common-law husband, the philosopher George Lewes, is dated May 31, 1872, and contains almost two pages discussing Romola and the pronunciation of the names of the Cadwalladers from Middlemarch.
