Lot 160
[MANUSCRIPT] In Festo Sanctae Rosaliae virginis ad missam.
Italy (likely Palermo), circa 1650-1700. Leaf from a 17th century antiphonal on paper, 18 1/2 x 13 inches (48 x 33 cm), elaborately illuminated in colors, the text and neums (other than the heading above) stencilled, the decoration of the opening (elaborate and most attractive) painted by hand. Recto with adhesions in the right margin, possibly from an old mount.
St. Rosalia is the patron saint of Palermo, and is invoked against plague. In 1624 her apparition appeared to several occupants of that city instructing them as to how to find her remains. These were then carried thrice around the walls, whereupon an epidemic that had beset the city ceased (or so one account goes). She has found new popularity in this era of COVID-19, invoked as a protection.
