Lot Details

Lot 163
[MUSIC] LISZT, FRANZ. Des bohémiens et leur musique en Hongrie.
Paris, Bourdilliat, 1859. First edition. Later boards. 7 x 4 3/4 inches (17.5 x 11 cm); [iv; half-title, title], 348, [1; errata] pp. Spine stripped and laid in in fragments, some minor foxing, a few neat pencil notes in the text. Ownership mark on front free endpaper of W. P. P. Longfellow.

A scarce work, the work proved controversial in Liszt's native Hungary, where it sparked a debate about the author's contention (as it was read, not entirely accurately, by his critics) that there was no Hungarian national music other than the music of the Roma. Copies of this work are quite uncommon; we note only one copy sold between 1934 and the present day.
