ARNO, PETER Circus.
New York: Horace Liveright, [1931]. Likely later printing, but with a fine inscription by Arno: "To Harold Arlen/the finest of the/younger novelists/writing in England/to-day/(But a swell guy)/ Peter Arno"; also with a small cartoon by Arno in the gutter margin. Some soiling to covers.
A wry and amusing greeting from Arno; at the time, Arlen, indubitably American, was one of the foremost composers and songwriters in the U.S. The slightly self-deprecating cartoon shows a man leaning out of the gutter margin, clearly seated on a W.C., asking "Who took my book?"; the apparent implication that Circus might lend itself to other purposes than reading.
