[PROVINCE OF MASSACHUSETS-BAY] Four early eighteenth century Massachussetts militia appointments, each signed by the governors of the time.
Comprises the appointment of Jonas Prescott as a Captain of a Company in the Regiment of Militia in the County of Middlesex, 24th January, 1715. 9 1/4 x 14 inches (23.5 x 36 cm); single-page printed document secretarially accomplished, wafer seal of the Province of Massachusetts Bay affixed at upper left; signed by William Tailer as acting Governor and Samuel Woodward as secretary. Usual folds, some toning and soiling, wear to edges; the appointment of Benjamin Prescott as Lieutenant of the Company of Foot whereof Jonas Prescott is Captain" 10th October, 1717. 13 x 16 3/8 inches (33 x 42 cm); single-page printed document secretarially accomplished, wafer seal of the Province of Massachusetts Bay affixed at upper left; signed by Samuel Shute as acting Governor and John Boydell as secretary. Usual folds, some toning and soiling, a few small separations; the appointment of Benjamin Prescott as First Lieutenant of the Company of Snow-shoe men or of those that are appointed to be to issue out upon an Alarum, against the Indian Enemy..." 11th March, 1724. 13 x 16 3/8 inches (33 x 42 cm); single-page printed document secretarially accomplished, wafer seal of the Province of Massachusetts Bay affixed at upper left; signed by William Dummer as Governor and Josiah Willard as secretary.
