[NEW YORK] The Heidelbergh Catechism, or Method of Instruction, in the Christian Religion, as the Same is Taught in the Reformed Churches and Schools of Holland. Translated for the use of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, of the City of New-York.
New York: John Holt, 1764. First American edition. An interleaved copy with the ink signature of Elizabeth Van Cortlandt at front and 63 pages of manuscript notes (being responses to about half of the 120 or so "questions" asked in the text, utilizing about half of the blank leaves). Contemporary calf, the covers ruled in blind. 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches (19 x 12 cm); 46 pp., interleaved, bound without the final blank (F4). The binding rubbed and with small losses and stains, light spotting to the title and text, the manuscript leaves generally fine but with the occasional flaw.

This is the very rare first American issue of the authorized translation of the Heidelbergh Catechism, approved by the Consistory of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of the City of New York, on June 5th, 1764. This copy belonged to and bears dozens of religious notations by Elizabeth (Cuyler) Van Cortlandt (1731-1815), daughter of Cornelis and Catharina Schuyler Cuyler. Of considerable rarity, we trace few copies of this first American edition institutionally or in commerce. Of the one copy of the 1764 edition recently located on ABE, also in blind-ruled calf, the title page is signed by Catherine van Rensselear (Schuyler), and it is likely these women received the volume around the same time. Encountered more frequently is the 1767 second New York edition as issued with the Psalms of David in Metre, printed by James Parker. Of the 1764 edition WorldCat reports copies at Dartmouth and NYPL; ESTC notes copies at AAS, the Morgan Library, and the Union Theological Seminary. Evans 9694; Sabin 31237.
