[TEXAS] JOHNSTON, JOSEPH EGGLESTON. Reports of the Secretary of War, with Reconnaissances of Routes from San Antonio to El Paso ... Also, the Report of Capt. R.B. Marcy's Route from Fort Smith to Santa Fe; and the Report of Lieutenant W.J.C. Whiting's Reconnaissances of the Western Frontier of Texas.
Washington: Printed at the Union Office, 1850. Senate issue. Original gilt lettered cloth stamped in blind. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 15 cm); 250 pp., two large folding maps, with 44 lithographed plates (of possible 72), several printed in colored, hand-colored or folding. The binding rubbed and with a few small stains, short tear to front blank, ownership markings throughout by George Vallete, light toning to the text, the plates with some foxing and stains and one nearly disbound, some evidence of the missing plates present, the maps with closed tears from mount and some creases from misfolding, a somewhat tired copy sold with all faults.

The first map in this work is Reconnaissances of Routes from San Antonio de Bexar to El Paso del Norte, opening to about 36 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches, maps Texas between the Rio Grande, Matagorda Bay, Preston and Fort Washita. The second is Map of the Route Pursued in 1849 by the U.S. Troops, Under the Command of Bvt. Lieut. Col. Jno. M. Washington, Governor of New Mexico, in an Expedition Against the Navajos Indians, opening to about 28 x 20 inches. This map showed the opening of the region to settlers following an expedition against the Navajo from Santa Fe to Canyon de Chelly. The expedition included exploration of the prehistoric pueblos.
