[MAP--CELESTIAL] BODE, I[OHANN ELERT] and SCHRAEMBL, [FRANZ] A[NTON]. Stereographischer Entwurf des Gestirnten Himmels...
Vienna: L. Alberti, [1787?]. Hand colored engraved map, central fold, framed. Sheet measures 24 x 28 inches (61 x 70.5 cm). Very short tears at top and bottom of fold, faint creasing in margins, a bright example, not examined out of frame.
Schraemble's scarce edition of Johann Bode's celestial chart of the Northern Hemisphere includes the constellations from antiquity as well as eighteenth century additions. Certain newer constellations commemorated recent scientific discoveries, such as Das Teleskop, based on Herschel's Telescope, and Die Luftpumpe, based on Robert Boyle's pneumatic pump. As this chart was published at the pinnacle of artistic representation of the stars, later ones often show fewer constellations. See Deborah Warner, The Sky Explored. Celestial Cartography 1500-1800 (New York, 1979), pp. 34-39.
