Two volumes, first edition. Brown leather spine and corners, marbled paper boards, gilt spine labels, edges sprinkled red. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches; volume 1: 464 pp., volume 2: 467 pp., engraved frontispiece and additional engraved title pages in each volume, engraved plates, illustrations in text, maps, folding maps. Light rubbing and wear to bindings mostly at extremities, short crack at the head of the rear joint on volume 2, contents lightly toned in the margins with a very occasional pale spot, old ownership signature to endpapers.
