Lot 121
LOUIS XIV, King of France Signed appointment of Richard Gaya on vellum.
Secretarially written in a fine court hand in black ink on vellum, dated 9th February 1682. 10 x 20 inches (25 x 51 cm); signed "Louis" lower center, with the customary endorsements and docketing. Lower blank right margin trimmed away, usual folds.
Gaya, a musketeer of the first company of the Royal Guard, is here appointed to a hereditary post in the town of Compiègne (in the Oise region of France), with a substantial emolument and associated customary rights and privileges. His family, as is acknowledged in the document, long held the office of Major of Compiègne (for over a century in all, beginning in 1638). They appear to have had a rather contentious relationship with the town where the privileges mentioned in the appointment were concerned, which gave rise to a number of lawsuits.
