Lot 127
[MUSIC-METHODISTS] Sacred Harmony, or a choice Collection of Psalms and Hymns, Set to Music in two and three Parts, for the Voice, Harpsichord & Organ.
[London: John Wesley, circa 1781]. First edition(?). Contemporary calf with a red morocco lettering label. 7 x 4 1/4 inches (18 x 10 cm); [7], 2-349, [5] pp., engraved music throughout, the variant with "T. Bennett sculp. Holborn Hill" to foot of p. 349.The hinges and joints tender with the rear blank detaching, the spine tip pulled and other small losses to binding, ink or stamp "JW" at head of title (for John Wesley?), ownership signature to front blank of Margaret Crowe/Farm Hill/Norwich 1788.

A rare book of Methodist psalms and hymns edited by John Wesley, featuring engraved music throughout. We trace few institutional copies and none at auction. ESTC T155276 (three variants of this title are recorded under different ESTC numbers). This is probably the earliest of the three, and was engraved by T. Bennett rather than G. Maund. It succeeded the earlier Sacred Melody, published 1761.
