Lot 187
PEAKE, MERVYN [Original drawing of a ballerina].
Charcoal, ink wash and yellow gouache on paper, signed in ink on lower right "For Pat / from Mervyn / 1944." Sheet measures 8 x 9 1/2 inches (20 x 24 cm), tipped to a wood veneered stiff card board measuring 12 x 14 7/8 inches (30.5 x 38 cm). Marginal creases in lower corners, spotting in a few areas on the sheet and more heavily on the board.

Though best known as the author of the Gormenghast series, Mervyn Peake was also an accomplished artist and illustrator. This charming drawing of a ballerina in an arabesque position was drawn during the most prolific period of his career, around the time when he finished writing Titus Groan and published some of his most acclaimed illustrations for new editions of works such as The Hunting of the Snark and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
