VARGAS Y PONCE, JOSE DE Relacion del ultimo viage al estrecho de Magallanes de la fragata de S.M. Santa Marma de la Cabeza en los anos de 1785 y 1786. Extracto de todos los anteriores desde su descubrimiento impresos y MSS. y noticia de los habitantes, suelo, clima y producciones del estrecho.

Two volumes, period quarter calf with covers of Spanish marble over boards, traces of old labelling piece on the first volume, the second retainign the full label. 9 1/4 x 6 5/8 inches (24 x 18 cm); [vi], xvi, 359, [1] pp.; [iv] 128 pp.; between the two volumes an engraved frontispiece portrait of Magellan, 5 engraved folding maps and 5 folding tables. Significant wear with restorations to the binding of the first volume especially, small defect with a resulting hole to the gutter of A8, tears to the gutter folds of two of the maps.
A rare work, printed in Ibarra's types by his widow, recording two important scientific expeditions to the Straits of Magellan in 1785-86. Commanded by Antonio de Córdoba (1740?-1811), this was the first comprehensive study of the region. It includes an account of the discovery of the Strait, as well as of the previous expeditions. The account of the second voyage includes an interesting description of the first encounter with the natives. "After these expeditions, the Spanish trade routes were exclusively to east coast ports and then overland to Pacific ports" (Hill 1756).
