Lot 24
[WEST VILLAGE-BURR, AARON] LOSS, CHARLES. A survey map of lands in today's West Village, dated 1798.
Manuscript map in ink on joined sheets of paper, with "Surveyed New York May 1, 1798/by Charles Loss City Surveyor" in ink at lower right, untitled. The map backed and with cloth border. 29 1/2 x 36 inches (75 x 92 cm). Stains, splits and tears, soiling, later markings within the image, losses to paper extremities and cloth border.

A late 18th century plan in the hand of City Surveyor Charles Loss, untitled but showing at the north the intersection of Herrings (now Bleeker) Street and Arden (now Morton Street) and a length of Brannon (later Spring) Street. Virtually every street named on this map would change within a few years of this drawing. Those that remain are the larger Hudson and Greenwich Street showing as the western boundary. The lost names include small Hetty, Budd, Hazard, Village, Arden, Brannon, Willow, Locust, and Prospect Streets. The names and layout here are consistent with the Mangin-Goerck plan of 1800, which shows the large square at the center of the present map as the home of Aaron Burr. The square is here marked in pencil as Varick Street and the homestead indicated in the center is believed to be Burr's house.
