Lot 46
[LOVE LANE] Map of Land and Buildings the property of Samuel I Tobias Esqr.
Manuscript map in ink and colors, with "Drawn February 4th 1825/Geo. B Smith/City Surveyor" in ink. 20 1/2 x 29 1/4 inches (52 x 74 cm). The map is backed. Small losses mostly around border, tears, soiling, some later markings within image.

An 1825 map of Love Lane, with attractive contemporary coloring in pink and green and a finely detailed compass rose. This is the second Love Lane recorded in New York City: the first was at the foot of Bowery Lane in the Rutgers Farm. This map shows the second Love Lane, also known as Abingdon Road, a lane that ran just north of West 21st Street in today's Chelsea neighborhood, lands previously owned by Peter Warren. It is known that courting couples would take long, secluded carriage rides down Love Lane. Apparently, the old lovers route was up Broadway, then known as Bloomingdale Road in this area, west on 21st Street and down Love Lane to Fitzroy Street. Warren Road presented here ran very close to what became 7th Avenue. The lands of Samuel Tobias here are measured at over 87,000 square feet and include a large dwelling house as well as stables, an ice house, etc. A fine map of one of New York City's earliest romantic rendezvous.
