William IV Gilt Bronze Mounted Tulipwood Bureau Plat by Town & Emanuel
Circa 1835
With three frieze drawers opposed by dummy drawers; the underside with a printed label: 'Town & Emanuel Manufacturers of Buhl Marqueterie, Resner [sic] & Carved Furniture, Tripods, Screens of the Finest & Most Superb Designs of the Times of Louis 14th. Splendid Cabinets & Tables inlaid with Fine Sevre [sic] & Dresden China .'. Height 29 inches (73.7 cm), width 49 1/2 inches (125.7 cm), depth 28 inches (71.1 cm).
Town & Emanuel (fl. 1830-1849) was among one of the first London firms to sell antique and produce revivalist furniture, reflecting aristocratic taste for Ancient Régime furniture styles; see Frances Collard, 'Town & Emanuel', Furniture History, vol. 32 (1996), pp. 81-89.
