Lot 26

17th Century
Portrait of a Lady in Mourning
Inscribed AE 57/1650 (ll)
Oil on Canvas
51 x 41 1/2 inches (129.5 x 105.5 cm)
Unframed
Provenance:
Mrs. J. M. Hayward (according to a label on back)
This painting was formerly thought to be a portrait of Frances Thornhurst Jennings, mother of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744). However, the license for Frances Thornhurst's marriage in 1643 gives her age as "about 18," which would mean that she was born around 1625. She would thus have be roughly 25 years old in 1650, when this portrait was painted, not 57, the age of the sitter given in the inscription. This may represent another lady of the Jennings or Thornhurst family.

Estimate: $1,000 - $3,000
Sold for $1,890 (includes buyer's premium)
